Is Fear Holding You Back Unnecessarily
In my last blog, “Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?”, I mentioned that fear was the third reason many of us unconsciously work against ourselves. But you might still be wondering: Why does fear make you your own worst enemy?
It’s simple — and yet profoundly human.
Fear keeps you stuck because of the story you tell yourself about something that happened in the past. Not the fact, not the truth, but the story.
And it’s this story — not reality — that shapes your behaviour, disrupts your confidence, and prevents you from taking the actions that would change your life.
Fear becomes a brake. A barrier. A wall between who you are today and who you’re capable of becoming.
And like so many of us, I learned this the hard way.
The Story That Held Me Back for 23 Years
It’s often said that we teach the very thing we need to master. And I can tell you now — that is true.
So let me share a fear I held onto for far too long.
A fear that silently governed my decisions and inconvenienced my life for over two decades — all because of a story I convinced myself was true.
I’ve been a qualified driver for more than 23 years, and for all that time, I refused — absolutely refused — to drive on the motorway once it got dark. Daylight? No problem. But once evening fell, I would panic at the thought of continuing the journey.
For 23 years, I held on to this belief — this story — that I simply could not drive at night because my eyesight wasn’t good enough, because I wore glasses, because nighttime driving was too risky for me.
But the truth? The reality?
My glasses corrected my vision perfectly.
My fear had nothing to do with eyesight and everything to do with imagination.

Fear Invents Stories — And We Believe Them
To keep myself safe from facing this fear, I created scenarios that were dramatic, terrifying, and entirely fictional.
I imagined crashing.
I imagined not being able to stay in my lane.
I imagined hazards I couldn’t see.
I imagined every possible worst-case scenario to justify avoiding nighttime driving altogether.
My imagination ran wild — and fear happily fed it.
On more than one occasion, if I was driving with my partner and evening started to fall, I would panic and insist he take the wheel. I always found a way out. Always had a “valid” excuse.
I constructed a story strong enough to feel like the truth — and lived by it for 23 years.
Until one weekend changed everything.
When Desire Becomes Bigger Than Fear

Fear loses its power the moment something becomes important enough to challenge it.
And I really wanted to attend a training event in a city about 125 miles away from home.
Nothing was stopping me — except the unavoidable fact that I would have to drive back in the dark.
In the past, that alone would have put a complete stop to my plans.
But this time?
No.
I had missed too many opportunities already.
This one mattered.
So I decided:
I’m going. And I’m driving myself.
I drove there and back — twice — on Saturday and Sunday.
It was dark.
It was raining heavily.
Visibility was low.
Conditions were far from ideal.
And yet… I did it.
Not only did I do it, but I did it calmly. Successfully. Repeatedly.
And I’ve done it many times since — without any fear at all.
A fear that lived inside me for more than two decades dissolved in a single weekend.
All because I replaced the story with reality.
Fear Is Not Fact — It Is a Reflection of Belief
Fear is directly connected to your limiting beliefs, and those beliefs are deeply connected to your inner state of mind.
So let me ask you:
Has fear been holding YOU back unnecessarily?
If so, here are three powerful questions to help you gain clarity:
What are you thinking and believing about yourself that is keeping you fearful?
Are you believing a story — or the truth? What are you imagining about your situation that keeps the fear alive?
Are you catastrophising? Predicting the worst? Playing a movie in your mind that doesn’t exist? What have you done to confront your fear?
And if you haven’t done anything yet…
What WILL you do?
My Story — Broken Down
Here is the reality of what I learned:
1. The Story Wasn’t Real
I told myself a story for years — that my eyesight was the problem.
It wasn’t.
It was fear.
2. I Visualised the Worst
I constantly imagined accidents. Hazards. Losing control.
And because I never challenged that story, fear maintained power over me.
3. Avoidance Strengthened the Fear
I avoided driving at night by handing responsibility to someone else.
Avoidance grows fear; it never shrinks it.
4. Action Dismantled the Fear Completely
One decision.
One weekend.
One aligned action.
And a fear that lived in me for 23 years disappeared.
Fear: The Acronyms We Live By
You’ve probably heard these before — but now they may make more sense:
FEAR — False Evidence Appearing Real
The story. The illusion. The imagined disaster.
FEAR — Finding Excuses And Reasons
The logical “explanations” you build to justify the avoidance.
Both are fear-driven illusions, not truth.
But here’s my favourite reframe:
FEAR — Focus + Energy + Action = Results
This is the true formula for success.
Focus on what you want
Put your energy behind it
Take aligned action
And the results will speak for themselves.
This is how you turn fear into power.
Redefine Fear — Let It Motivate, Not Dominate
Fear is not the enemy.
Avoidance is.
When you combine peace in your mind with action in your body, something shifts.
Fear becomes a signal, not a stop sign.
A guide, not a barrier.
This is where equilibrium lives.
This is where self-belief grows.
This is where you stop being your own worst enemy.
